The bar charts below give information on road transport in a number of European countries.

The bar charts illustrate the average distance travelled per person by various modes of transport and the average daily commuting time in six European countries, along with the European Union average.

Overall, car use dominates in all countries, with Denmark recording the highest figure, while Spain and Germany show the lowest car usage. In contrast, Denmark also leads in alternative transport use, and the UK has the longest average commuting time.

Danish citizens travel approximately 12,500 kilometres per year by car, the highest among the six countries. In comparison, residents of Spain and Germany travel significantly less, falling below the EU average. Notably, Denmark also has the highest use of public or non-car transport (bus, tram, metro, or bicycle), with over 3,000 kilometres per person annually—more than double the EU average. The UK and France, by contrast, record less than a third of that distance.

In terms of commuting time, the UK tops the list at around 47 minutes per day, whereas Denmark and Italy report much shorter durations, likely due to more efficient public transport systems.
