The pie charts compare the proportion of money average households in Japan and Malaysia spent on various things in the year 2010. Overall, Japan and Malaysia spent the most on three household expenses namely housing, food, and other goods and services. Both of these countries spent the least on health care and transport.

First of all, Malaysians and Japanese spent almost a quarter of their income on food, at 27% and 24%, respectively. For other goods and services, the Japanese spent 29% which is 3% higher than what Malaysians spent on this item. By contrast, Malaysians spent the most on housing (34%) and it was 13% higher than what the Japanese spent on it.

On the other hand, while Japanese spent 6% of their income on healthcare, Malaysians spent only 3% on it. Transport was the fourth biggest expenditure in both countries but the Japanese spent (20%) considerably more than Malaysians (10%) on it.
