SAMPLE MONOLOGUE

After more than a year of not seeing and spending time with my parents because of the pandemic and stricter travel restrictions, I finally met them just recently during my mom’s 80th birthday. It was incredibly special that never had I thought of missing them so much.
Well, I’m actually living alone because of work and my hometown is 500 miles away from the place where I’m currently living. Before the pandemic, I made sure to see them thrice a year, during their birthdays and Christmas holidays. It’s our culture to spend time with our parents during special days, and I’m so proud of that culture of ours as it always reminds us to appreciate our parents.

However, when the news about the pandemic broke, the movement got harder and harder – lockdowns, travel restrictions here and there (in different places), and the issue of safety ruined my yearly plan of seeing them. It was completely challenging for me to catch up with (to talk to someone after not seeing them for a long time) my parents since both of them aren’t tech-savvy (proficient in the use of modern technologies). They didn’t know how to use smartphones and no one could teach them how to use the internet since they live remotely. So, the only means of communication was the telephone. Actually, I regretted not spending time teaching them how to use Skype, Facebook Messenger, or any social applications, when I was with them. If only I had taught them how to use smart devices or the internet, we wouldn’t have difficulty communicating with one another.

So, a month ago, travel restrictions were lifted, and I was inexplicably (cannot be explained) excited since I could visit my parents after more than a year. Although months before last month, the travel regulations were adjusted, still I didn’t gamble traveling because I was unvaccinated and so were my parents. I was scared that I might get contracted with the virus and make them contracted too. To be continued…

SO what other ideas can you add? If you’re to complete this sample monologue, how will you fully develop this story? Be creative! Make use of your imaginative skills.

continuation…
Anyway, the most awaited day finally came. I couldn’t contain my happiness (couldn’t prevent myself from feeling happy) seeing them. I was a bit teary-eyed, I’m not really an emotional guy but I just couldn’t help myself then. My mom said that my presence or my arrival was the best birthday present she received on her 80th birthday. It was lovely and memorable. And one important lesson I learned from that experience and this pandemic is that spend time with your loved ones, don’t make any excuses because everyone’s time in this world is limited and you’ll never know when’s the last time you’re gonna see them.
